Lace-up shoes enjoy extreme popularity: they’re the most common type of shoe. The best-known types of lace-up shoes are the oxford, the derby, and the blucher.
Lace-up shoes are the most common type of shoe. As their name indicates, they’re closed by means of a shoelace that’s laced through eyelets or lugs. There are two main varieties of lace-up shoes: those with closed lacing, and those with open lacing. On shoes with open lacing, such as the Derby, the Budapester, most boots, and the Blucher, the side pieces lie on top of the vamp, which in turn flows into the tongue of the shoe.
On the other hand, shoes with closed lacing, such as the Oxford, feature side pieces that are attached beneath the vamp and which close above the sewn-in tongue. As a result, these types of shoes look as though they’ve been made from a single piece of leather.
